Hickory - Grafting services (May 10-25th) available. $10/superior 2 year seedling on request only. Working out hiccups in clonal bareroot hickory propagation so clones will not be for sale at least until Spring 2026. I highly recommend Rock Bridge Nursery while I get my clonal propagation in order. I only recommend the varieties listed below.

Willing to provide free hybrid bitshag seedlings to anyone in WI if you provide a 2 year notice before planting, plant at least one acre, permit me to evaluate trees, are willing to plant on 10x10ft max, willing to cull up to 90% of trees at my disgression, and permit me to clone the resulting selections freely.

All bearing characteristics have exceptions of severe drought or poor soil fertility. Water seems to be one of the biggest factors in reliable and heavy bearing. Even tried and true varieties like Weschcke and Fairbanks don't bear hardly any nuts in terrible growing years like that of 2023 in the Upper Midwest. This habbit keeps trees alive and low in disease.

Expect the majority of hybrid seedlings to be bearing their first crop in 12 years when grown in corn level fertility and generous care with a 12 year tree size of about 10ft wide by 15ft tall.

For Home Cracking and Candidates for Oil Pressing:

Nonastringent cured but mild astringency when uncured. Fastest growing hickory and heaviest recorded single year crop at Badgersett. Sapsucker susceptible. High twig, nut, leaf, and petiole gall (Phylloxera) susceptiblity which causes major crop loss on bad years; I only recommended growing this variety if you intend on burning or grazing of leaf litter in fall reliably. This is a high input variety that should be used in mostly in breeding. Some canopy health issues due to Phylloxera. Canker resistant. Low leaf holding. Strong & spreading side branches off central leader. 30 deg crotch angles flattening towards 45 deg. Slightly wavy branches and fractally twig pattern. Typical shag type bud. Barely shagging with narrow shag plates to bark. Late receptivity. Canton, MN tested. -29F. Not yet given permission to release from Badgersett.

Mild flavor that is okay but mostly just oily; slight astringency. 20% easy extraction, 70% finger extraction, 20% halves, 40% quarters, 40% pieces. Variable face entanglement. A Jesse and Eric selection. Appears pollen fertile.
  • "Long False Siers" - GlabraxShagxBit, possibly ShagxOvalisxBit. 50% kernel, 3.3-3.8g kernel, no astringency, productivity not well observed, shagbark aroma, mild black walnut flavor, late. Good extraction. 80% easy extraction, 100% finger extraction. 25% halves, 70% quarters, 5% pieces. Crack head to heel. For Home Cracking and Milking:

Better than Grainger. 44% kernel, 3.1-3.6g kernel, high low alternate bearing, rich shag flavor similar to Grainger. 80% easy extraction. 100% finger extraction. 50% halves, 50% quarters. Cracks well either direction. Moderare pellicle adhesion; this is one of the trees main faults but purely cosmetic and Grainger has this issue too. Does not self-hull but husks are easy to take off; this is likely inherted from her mom, Grainger who doesn't self hull reliably. Untested in high fertility; bearing habbits may be more regular when fertilized. Ripens with wild shagbarks in Niagara Co. I expected it to ripen reliably through zone 4b due to ripening time. Bearing observed for over 5 years. -18F proven though non-pecan hickories are almost always all hardy to zone 4a. Niagara Co, NY bred. Glen Lauffer selection, named in rememberance of his father.

Requires over-cracking head to heel. Pollen fertile. -36F. St Croix Co, WI native

Honey Locust - Fall or Spring transplant. 1 year experimental superior seedlings available on request only. Grafted cloones experimental here and are available. We cull 80% of honey locust seedlings. We cull Honey Locust if there is: any too much stem dieback, if they have thorns, or if the tree does not grow enough compared to its siblings. Breeding site surveys suggests that 5% of offspring will be comperable to the parents. Expect 70% of our culled seedlings to develop thorns by the time they are 10ft tall. $40/grafted 2 yr plant. $10/1 yr seedling upon custom request only.
  • Monroe - 35% sugar, 75% pericarp avg, 10% protein, mostly seedless, biennially productive, completely thornless, vigorous. -19F proven hardiness. Kalamazoo Co, MI tested
  • The 10% protein is very interesting because seeds are said to carry the protein but Monroe pods are nearly seedless and carry a similar amount of protein by dry weight as a very seedy typical pod. The protein of these pods is likely much more digestable to cows due to the protein not being carried in the seeds. Medium stem dieback on first year nursery grafts in WI.

  • Millwood - Very bad stem dieback on first year nursery grafts in WI.

  • Black Walnut - $50/epicotyl grafted 1 yr plant available 2025.
    • "Lions 2,11" - Excellent bearing in poor fertility, great crackout at 3.8/4 quarters avg easy extraction, 4.0/4 finger extraction, 0.5/4 kernel crushing, 4.0g kernel, 28% kernel, good health, good form, E-M season. Best extraction when overcracked with moistened kernel. Terminal bud dieoff typical. -31F. Grand Junction IA
    • "Lions 3,5" - Excellent bearing in poor fertility, great crackout at 3.7/4 quarters avg easy extraction, 3.9/4 finger extraction, no kernel crushing, 5.0g kernel, 31% kernel on drought year, 26% in 2021 during prior crop, good health, fine form, M-L season. -31F. Grand Junction IA
    • "Elm" - 6.0g kernel, 32% kernel. Heavy annual bearing, good crackout 3.0/4 fall out extraction, 3.9/4 finger extraction, kernel shatter resistant due to shell structure and kernel structure, questionably late for WI, good health, great form, -31F. My favorite proven tree though agitation easy extration may be an issue for machine cracking. The only selection I have observed to bear heavily over 3 straight years of drought without watering or fertilizer. Grand Junction IA
    • "Military Ridge" - 4.8g kernel, 28% kernel. Alternate heavy bearing, 3.5/4 quarters avg, late, good health, okay form, smooth texture and good flavor, terminial buds sometimes dont develop and some stem dieback often occurs but is >40 years old and bears well none-the-less. My second favorite tree. -29F. Mt Horeb WI native.
    • "Emma K" - I am in need of nuts for evaluation. Spoken of very highly by experts.
    • "Ohio" - 6.2g 29% kernel. Poor extraction. 10% finger extraction. Not recommended.

American Persimmon - Only seed available. Seed sourced from the fruit dropping prior to mid-September in Indiana breeding orchard from select plants. Expect 1 in 400 of all the seedlings to be fully adapted, taste good, and be female in Southern WI. 400-800 seeds/lb. $80/lb superior early fruiting seed. Graft unions tend to be quite tender and the scions and rootstocks are not of proven hardiness (Meader is a shit flavored tree so don't get it). If you do get grafted tree, don't, but get Yates, Prok, or I115 as they are solid great early trees.
